After three months (Ida)/ two months (Cecilie&Camilla) of travelling we are finally done with Argentina and Chile, and are now looking forward to be on the South American backpackertrail through Bolivia, Peru, Equador and Colombia.
We had some fantastic months in the southern part of South America. I started with spanish course, a tango lesson or two and city life in Buenos Aires for three weeks, before Cecilie and Camilla arrived. Together we ate tons of steaks, drank some bottle of red wines and enjoyed lazy days in Buenos Aires, before heading south to Pategonia.
We spent three weeks in Pategonia. We went hiking and biking in Bariloche and El Bolson. We hiked some of the worlds most famous mountains in El Chalten, and saw the worlds biggest, still growing glacier in El Calafate. From El Calafate we crossed the border over to Chile, where we rented tent and did the w-hike for five days/fours nights, in amazing Torres del Paine.
After three weeks of freezing we were ready for christmas on the beach, and headed east to Argentina's coast. (On over way to the beach we had an overnight stop in Puerto Madryn and checked out half a million of penguins.) Christmas in Mar del Plata turned out not to be the greatest idea, so we escaped quit quickly to Buenos Aires, where we had a wonderul second christmas celebration. Still not given up on beach parties, we decided to try Punta del Este, in Uruguay (South America's StTropez) for New Years, without better luck. After New Years we spent some relaxing days on the beaches of Punta del Diablo and Cabo Polonio, before city sightseeing in Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento.
Time for Iguazu Falls! Probably the worlds most famous and beautiful waterfall. And we dont disagree, it's really breathtaking. Since Puerto Iguazu is far away from everythong we needed to catch a 35hour bus to get to Mendoza, red wine heaven! We drank some wine, did a biketrip, joined some asados (BBQ's), and then we were ready for detox and hiking in the Andes mountains. We stayed three days in a small "town" called Uspallata (2900moh) - hiking and checking out aconcagua 6962moh. From Uspallata it was only a 6 hour bus to Chile. We had a quick two days stop - sightseeing, eating and partying in Santiago and two days chiling and checking out the incredible streetart in Valparaiso. We dicussed if we should check out the beaches in chile, but after the failures in Argentina we decided to wait till Peru. Last stop in Chile was San Pedro the Atacama, a place with some amazing and wierd landscape. We checked out the Valle de la Luna (moon valley), Geysir de Tatio and a couple of lamas.
Next stop is Bolivia, where the plan is to stay almost six weeks. We will start with an amazing trip to Salar de Uyuni, then some spanish course (and probably our first foodpoison) in Sucre, then head to the jungle bear grills style - we will make our own huts and catch our own food. We will see the mines of Pototsi, have a short stop in Copacabana, party and shop lama stuff in La Paz, cycle the famous death road and then volenteer at an animal rescue center for two weeks. We will end the trip in Bolivia with Lake Ticitaka and Isla del Sol.
Excited? Yes we are!
