We went to Mar del Plata to celebrate christmas. Mar del Plata was suppose to be THE PLACE to be. Lots of people, lots of party, and great beach.. Apparently thats not the situation for christmas holidays. Mar del Plata was dead (except for the overcrowded beaches).
There were no other backpackers, the party was quite dead, and the beach was not great.
Still we had a good time, and enjoyed the warm weather after some cold weeks in Pategonia.
Mar del Plata is the beachtown for Argentiniens, outside high season there are 700 000 people living there, in high season there´s about 3-4 millions.
If you want to go to the beach, I`ll recommend Uruguay!
We read about this great Cuban bar we're you could get superfresh Mojitos 2 for 1. We we're excited!
But sadly they didn't know how to make Mojitos. Who wrote that review?
Christmas, 24 december!
We woke up Christmas morning, looked out the window and this was the view:
Rain, rain, rain.
We did not know how long it would last for, so we ran out, bough some eggs to make an omelet and some red wine. We sat inside enjoying our delicious omelet and wine, waiting for the rain to stop.
But hey - the rain never stopped.
After several hours of hanging inside - looking out the window, we decided to defy the rain and go out to eat. We walked around in the streets looking for an open restaurant, couldn't find any. Then we decided to check subway - also closed. And we walked all the way to McDonalds - out last hope, but ofcourse also closed.
So we went home again.. in the rain.
Back home in the hostel we didn't have any food cause we did not know all the restaurant we're closed on Christmas. Luckily other backpackers felt sorry for us and gave us their leftovers, so we had a little christmas dinner afterall.
Where to stay:
We stayed at Playa Grande Suits, 80 Arg pesos (90kr). Really friendly reception! Good area, and nice enough hostel.
How to get there:
Bus from Puerto Madryn: 16 hours, 600 Arg. pesos (650nok)
Bus from Buenos Aires: 4-5 hours, 250 Arg. pesos (300nok).
