Are you only going one place in Uruguay, or are you looking for the perfect beachtown? Go to Cabo Polonio! Its wonderful.
We didn't do much - we drank Caprinias on the beach, went for morningswims, laid in hammocks, had beers in the sunset.. Its the smallest little beachtown, and its so narrow you're able to see both the sunrise and the sunset on the same day.
And there is no electricity, so in the evning you have to light candles and walk around with flashlights. Perfect!

What to do:
Walk through the dessert to Valizia - the nabour town. You can either do a dayhike, takes about 2-3hours one way, or walk with your backpack and stay in Valizia for the night.
Drink Clerico and dance at the beachbar during sunset.
Walk around and check out the supercute Sealions.
Where to stay:
Panchos hostel! The best hostel in Cabo Polonio, right on the beach. A bit expensive, but everything in Uruguay is. We paid 600 Uruguay pesos (180nok) a night.
How to get there:
From Montevideo: 4 hours bus, and then 40min in a 4 wheeler.
From Punta del Diablo: 1 hour bus.
We hitchhiked because the buses where full.
