Nærøyfjorden is one of Norway and the worlds most dramatic and beautiful fjords, and in 2006 the fjord became a part of UNESCO´s World Heritage. The fjord is 17km long and on its narrowest, 250m wide. Its settings are unique with steep, snowcapped mountains, waterfalls and small, cosy farms.

There are different routes to go, when hiking around Nærøyfjorden. We were recommended to go Rimstigen, which is a beautiful hike! Its only 2,2km, but the steepest part its 32 procent slope and you walk up the mountain wall which gives you an amazing view over the fjord during the whole hike.

We started the trip driving from Gudvangen Camping to Bakka, and parked the car appr. 500 metres after the church at Bakka. From there you walk along the road till you see a sign for Rimstigen, and after that you follow the path all the way to the top.

We started early, and had the sun rising over the mountain. Beautiful.

Most of the time during the walk you have this amazing view.

On the top you see this sign, where you can choose to go further into the mountains to Vassete.
We meet three girls who´d been walking for two-three days, sleeping in the mountains in a tent. They came from Vassete, and where heading down to Bakka.
There´s also a book on the top, where you write your name, number and nationality, as well as today´s date.

The "boring" part about Rimstigen, is that you never reach a peak. The Rimstigen hike only goes up to app.700meters, while the peak is  app.1400meters, you therefor don´t get the same dramatic view as you do when hiking for example to Preikestolen or Kjerag.

We stayed a couple hours on the top. Enjoyed the sun, had a longer lunch, and walked around for a bit. And we found this most amazing glacier lake.

We actually stayed so long, that the sun started to set. We had to hurry down, to not get stuck on the top in the dark. Haha.

  1. Hi. Great photos! Did you see any signs for "bakkanosi" or "breiskrednosi?" I think it starts at the rimstigen trail. Thanks!
